The series Serambi Jazz will enter its second year in 2010, after a successful start in 2009. This program reinvigorates a relationship among German and Indonesian jazz music that has been fostered since 1967. Goal of Serambijazz is that musicians and audience in both countries get to know and understand each other by an exchange of information on cultural backgrounds and the development of jazz music in performances and workshops. Jazz enthusiasts (especially) in Jakarta and its surroundings have welcomed the performances of high quality jazz music by Indonesian and German musicians.
Riza Arshad, jazz musician, composer and curator of the program Serambi Jazz at Goethe-Institut Jakarta, said: "By the program Serambi Jazz, we hope to learn about other cultures and that it may serve to appreciate jazz music – thereby completing activities in jazz music in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. This may be achieved by a good relationship among jazz musicians and the jazz community in Indonesia and Germany and will develop further, be maintained and be handed down from generation to generation."
Serambi Jazz starts 2010 with the german/finnish/portugees collaboration TUOMI, named after Kristina Tuomi, the vocalist of the group.
The Trio TUOMI, comprising alto singer, piano and double bass, is one of the most remarkable products of the great Berlin jazz melting pot. German-Finnish vocalist Kristiina Tuomi and pianist Carsten Daerr first started setting Shakespeare sonnets to music while studying jazz together in Berlin. Portuguese bassist and Berlin transplant Carlos Bica, who has been making quite a splash for some time now with his band Azul, then completed the trio.
Their debut album „Tightrope Walker“, already acclaimed in insider circles, was followed in 2007 by the CD „The Expense of Spirit“, which proved once and for all that TUOMI is not about putting on song recitals with accompaniment, but a congenial trio at work, with a unique blend of Scandinavian folk, jazzy pop, Shakespeare-inspired art song and Mediterranean Saudade.
”TUOMI enthrals listeners,” raved one radio reviewer under the spell of their latest album. Audiences south of the Equator will be likewise spellbound by their Indonesia tour.
TUOMI plays two concerts this week, tomorrow in Bandung and on friday in Jakarta.
