The growing popularity of jazz among young people in Indonesia is documented in the increasing numbers of jazz communities, whose members come mainly from universities, high schools and local music schools. Those are the places where many of their members make their first steps in learning jazz. Once a year they are given a chance to perform on Jakarta's only fulltime jazz club, Black Cat Jazz Supper Club.
The Jazz Band Competition 2010 is initiated to support and encourage young jazz musicians. The event is divided into two preliminary rounds and a grand final round. All rounds take place at Black Cat.
Participants have to conform to the following requirements:
- Participants have to be students at high school, university or music school with the maximum age of 20 years.
- Bands can contain 5 members maximum, including vocalist(s)
- Each band will present 2 songs, selected from the following list

2. Stella by Starlight
3. Ornithology
4. Cute
5. Alice in Wonderland
6. Straight no Chaser
7. Seven Steps to Heaven
8. Solar
9. Caravan
10. Speak Low
11. There is no greater Love
12. Like Someone in Love
13. All Blues
The judges of the competition are indonesian senior jazz musicians, such as Idang Rasjidi, Oele Pattiselano and Taufan Goenarso or other wellknown indonesian jazz musicians.
The participants compete for the significant price money of 12 million rupiah. The winner goes home with 5 million rupiah, the runner-up takes 4 million and the 3rd place still gets 3 million. All winners will also be awarded with a trophy and all 10 finalists will earn a certificate from Black Cat Jazz Supper Club.
The preliminary rounds take place on sunday 2nd and 9th of may and the Grand Final on sunday may 16th.
