Kota Kinabalu, 2 June 2010 - Running strong in its fourth year, the KK Jazz Festival (KKJF) is making a high profile return on 18 and 19 June 2010 at the Covered Tennis Court, Sutera Harbour Marina, Golf & Country Club. This year, the festival promises to be another ground breaking experience with a great line up of artists, a series of pre-festival fringe events, workshops as well as a jazz talent search.
Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival is an annual fund raising jazz extravaganza organized by the Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu (RCKK) with the support of the Society of Performing Arts Kota Kinabalu Sabah (SPArKS). Staged in the picturesque Nature Resort City of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the jazz festival brings together a musical melting pot of talents from around the world. The festival was initiated in 2007 with the aim of promoting Kota Kinabalu in the international musical scene.
The inaugural event was held at the Jesselton Point, a renowned waterfront establishment in KK. By its second edition in 2008, KK Jazz Festival attracted international talents such as Greg Lyons from the United Kingdom and Denise Mininfield from the United States of America. In 2009, the festival expanded to a 2-night event, successfully drawing over 2,000 participants.
Apart from promoting KK as a tourism destination internationally, the festival has also successfully raised public awareness of the local community towards the jazz music genre. With a series of fringe pre-events and workshops, the festival is an excellent platform for learning and interaction between local music enthusiasts and the international artists.
KKJF 2010 is sponsored by Sabah Development Bank, Digi, Carlsberg, Ministry of Tourism, Culture & Environment Sabah as well as Sutera Harbour Resort. The KK Jazz Festival is now a signature event in the Sabah’s annual calendar of events, and is also a key component of the Kota Kinabalu Arts Festival.
Money raised from the Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival is used to fund deserving community projects by the Rotary Club Kota Kinabalu – The Clean Water Projects. Some of the rural communities benefiting from such initiatives include Kg Sonition, Kg Timbou & Kg Bimbolon, all in interior Sabah.
