This is the coolest and freshest music event – just like its slogan, Cooler. Fresher. - blending jazz with an ethnic concept and the amazing beauty of the Mount Bromo area.
Because of the success of this event the first time around, Jazz Gunung (which means “Mountain Jazz”) will be back this year with even more enthusiasm and present even more artists, including ESQI:EF featuring Syaharani and Donny Suhendra, I Wayan Balawan and Batuan Ethnic Fusion, C Two Six (C26 jazz community, Surabaya), Androginn (Malang Jazz Forum) and Monday Night Band from Yogyakarta. Indonesia’s veteran artists Butet Kartaredjasa and Djaduk Ferianto will act as presenters for this event.
At 2000 metres above sea level, visitors will derive distinct pleasure from a jazz performance. The most special could well be the unparalleled enjoyment to be had from watching ESQI:EF featuring Syaharani and the guitarist Donny Suhendra, who will present materials from their new album which is now being recorded.
Meanwhile, the guitarist I Wayan Balawan with Batuan Ethnic Fusion will present a special tapping technique married to the exotic Balinese gamelan.
Jazz Gunung will also be a place for the younger generation to express themselves musically as the organizers are giving three community bands jazz from Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Malang the opportunity to perform. Their rhythm will reverberate not only on the courtyard stage but also all over the Bromo conservation area.
Meanwhile, Djaduk Ferianto, who this year will collaborate with a traditional musical group, is sure to give an astounding performance like he did last time. The traditional performing art of Jathilan Reog will also be part of the opening of this event which will be in harmony with the life breath of the local community.
Sigit Pramono, the conceptualizer, wants this event to contribute to the rebranding of the tourist area around Bromo so that the place will be known not only for its sunrise but also for other interesting reasons. And he thinks bringing ethnic jazz to this courtyard will unite visitors with the fame of this mountain that people are so fond of.
