The social gap between Eastern Indonesia and other areas in Indonesia weigh in singer Glen Fredly’s conscience. In October, Glen will organize a cultural festival with the theme,” Seeing Indonesia from the East” in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara.
“The Festival will combine the diplomacy of three area’s art and culture, which are Papua, Maluku and East Nusa Tenggara,” said Glen to Tempo, before performing in the “World Drug Campaign” jazz concert to be held by the Faculty of Medicine of Indonesia Islamic University, Sunday (27/6). Besides him, a singer from Papua, Edo Kondolongit, and a singer from Ambon, Franky Sahilatua, will perform in the cultural feast.
The idea to organize an art and cultural festival originated from Glen’s concern on the social gap in Eastern Indonesia. “The gap on poverty, knowledge and education in East Indonesia is too far,” he said. Meanwhile, Eastern Indonesia is a national asset that is not yet well managed.
According to Glen, everyone is responsible to make Eastern Indonesia more prosperous. “Because all this time, this area was not taken care of,” said Glen. He said he hoped that the festival could trigger the young generation to pay more attention to Eastern Indonesia. “I hope this could be an oasis for young generation, “said Glen, who organizes the event by himself so far. He plans to hold the festival three years in a row. The first one will be held in Kupang, then in Papua and Maluku.
